How a Mini-Split Works

A mini-split system operates using two main components--an indoor air-handling unit and an outdoor compressor/condenser. These units are connected by a conduit that houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain.

The process begins when the indoor unit draws in warm air from the room. This air is passed over a set of cold evaporator coils filled with refrigerant, which absorbs the heat from the air.

Once the air is cooled, it is circulated back into the room. The refrigerant, now carrying the absorbed heat, travels through the conduit to the outdoor compressor unit. In the outdoor compressor unit, the refrigerant is compressed, and the absorbed heat is expelled to the outside air. The refrigerant then cools and returns to its liquid state, ready to be cycled back to the indoor unit to absorb more heat.

This continual loop allows the mini-split system to efficiently regulate the temperature within a specific area. The system is controlled by a thermostat or remote control, allowing precise temperature adjustments. Each indoor unit operates independently, allowing different temperatures to be maintained in different zones of a building.
